László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946), Maler, Fotograf, Bauhauslehrer und Gründer des »New Bauhaus« und der »School of Design« in Chicago war einer der ersten multimedial wirkenden Künstler, der Malerei, Skulptur, Fotografie, Film und Design als gleichwertige Kunstgattungen ausübte. Von Walter Gropius 1923 als Nachfolger von Johannes Itten an das Bauhaus in Weimar berufen, zog László Moholy-Nagy mit diesem nach Dessau um, bevor er 1933 Nazi-Deutschland verließ und schließlich 1937 in Chicago seine zweite Heimat fand. Sowohl als Lehrer als auch Künstler folgte er seiner revolutionären Vision, die künstlerische Tätigkeit in das alltägliche Leben einfließen zu lassen und damit Kunst und Leben zu vereinen. Seinem radikalen experimentellen Ansatz folgend, keine ästhetische Hierarchie in seinen Arbeiten zuzulassen, bewegte sich Moholy-Nagy souverän zwischen Malerei, Fotografie und Film und definierte sich gleichzeitig als Maler und als Fotograf. Für die Wertschätzung der Fotografie, die als neues Medium bis dahin noch nicht als Kunst angesehen wurde, lieferte er einen wesentlichen Beitrag. Der Band schenkt einen hervorragenden Einblick in das Leben und Werk des Avantgardekünstlers.
