Grundlage der Gedichte sind Mitschriften von den Nürnberger Kriegsverbrechertribunalen und vom Prozeß gegen Eichmann in Jerusalem. Reznikoff hat nichts hinzuerfunden, sondern lediglich ausgewählt, arrangiert und in Verse gesetzt, um dem Langgedicht einen Rhythmus zu verleihen, der der Sprache der Geschichte angemessen ist.
