Počas druhej svetovej vojny utiekla do Londýna, aby unikla hrozbe nacizmu. V Londýne písala z podkrovného bytu, ktorý bol podľa jej slov často otriasaný bombami. Graef sa neskôr presťahovala do Oxfordu, kde pracovala ako asistentka redaktora Lexicon of Patristic Greek.
