Since 1955, the annual World Press Photo contest has set the standard in visual journalism. World Press Photo 2017 brings you the winners - the most striking images and compelling stories from 2016. Selected from over 80,000 pictures taken from 5,034 photojournalists and documentary photographers from 125 different countries, the prize-winning pictures are presented in a moving, sometimes disturbing document. World Press Photo 2017 both informs, and inspires an understanding of the world.

Every year since 1958 an international jury has convened in the Netherlands under the auspices of the World Press Photo Foundation to choose the world's finest press photographs. Universally recognized as the definitive competition for photographic reportage, it has been described by former art director of The Sunday Times, Michael Rand, as "the international photographic contest." The pick of international visual reportage from 1992 some 150 pictures submitted by photojournalists, press agencies, newspapers and magazines throughout the world - is brought together for the The World Press Photo Competition 1993, the 36th contest in the series. Selected from over 15,000 images of the highest quality, taken by more than 1,500 photographers representing over 70 countries, each shot encapsulates one of the year's historic dramas. Showing all walks of life, portraying private happenings as well as headline news, they make up a mosaic of time on the wing.
