Die Prophezeiungen des Nostradamus beginnen mit dem Jahre 1555. Sie erstrecken sich über 23 Jahrhunderte und enthalten eine fortlaufende Geschichtsschreibung bis zum Jahre 3797 n. Chr. Michel Nostradamus, eigentlich Michel de Notredame, wurde am 14. Dezember 1503 in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence geboren. Arzt von Beruf wurde er jedoch noch zu Lebzeiten berühmt für seine Prophezeiungen. Typische Merkmale seiner Voraussagen sind das fast vollständige Fehlen von konkreten Zeitangaben und Namen und eine sehr metaphorische Sprache, die die Prophezeiungen bis in unsere Zeit rätselhaft erscheinen lassen. Das hier vorliegende Werk, es basiert auf der den Originalschriften des Nostradamus aus dem Jahre 1558 am nächsten kommenden 1668 von Jean Ribon verlegten und um die späten Schriften erweiterten Pariser Ausgabe, liefert einen umfassenden Überblick über die wichtigsten Prophezeiungen des berühmten Sehers, die den Ruhm des Nostradamus begründet haben.

Nostradamus, latinisiert für Michel de Nostredame, geboren am 14. Dezember 1503 in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, gestorben am 2. Juli 1566 in Salon-de-Provence war ein französischer Apotheker und hat als Arzt und Astrologe gearbeitet. Schon zu seinen Lebzeiten machten ihn seine prophetischen Gedichte berühmt, welche aus Gruppen von je 100 zusammengefassten Vierzeilern zusammengefassten Vierzeilern (Quatrains) bestanden, den sogenannten Centurien. Diese Buch enthält alle seine bekannten Prophezeiungen, die er in Centurien und Allmanachen niedergeschrieben hat. Einleitend gibt der Brief an seinen Sohn César viele Hinweise auf die persönlichen Motivationen und Intentionen von Nostradamus. Am Ende dieses Buches legt Nostradamus in einem Brief an den Französischen König Heinrich II diesem seine Beweggründe für die Prophezeiungen dar und gibt zudem noch detaillierte Prognosen ab. Dieser Brief ist auch eine Absicherung gegen seine Feinde, da er stets betont, dass er sich immer bei seinen Prophezeiungen im Einklang mit Gott und der christlichen Lehre befindet.
