Doktor Pascal je Zolova novela o rodinných vzťahoch a o strete vedy a cirkvi. Autor jej dej sa typicky skrúca, namiesto harmónie dáva priestor tragédii. Hlavná postava, doktor Pascal sa venuje medicíne 12 rokov. Jeho matka, madam Rougon, má o syna starosti. Chcela mať z neho slávneho doktora. No on popri výskume lieku proti dedičným chorobám, zbiera dôverné materiály o členoch rodiny. Nie všetci z rodiny schvaľujú jeho výskum a obávajú sa zhromaždeného materiálu. Madam Rougon sa pokúša získať Clotildu, neter doktora Pascala, ktorá žije v strýkovom dome, na svoju stranu. Clotilda spolu s ňou opustí strýka, no je voči nemu naďalej lojálna. Cíti však, že sa strýko občas mieša do Božích plánov a pokúša sa zničiť dokumenty. Pascal si uvedomí, že miluje Clotildu, a napokon sa z netere a strýka stanú milenci. Clotilda musí odcestovať do Paríža a vracia sa, keď zistí, že je tehotná. Pascal však dve hodiny pred jej príchodom umiera. Kompromitujúce dokumenty madam Rugon spáli.
