Gegen den Tensen Ran haben Gabimaru und Yuzuriha kaum eine Chance, denn er ist ihnen schon durch sein Tao-Element überlegen. Besonders Gabimaru, für den Rans Tao wie Gift wirkt, ist machtlos. An der Schwelle zum Tod angekommen, fasst der furchtlose Shinobi den Entschluss, auf Gedeih und Verderb zu überleben. Doch der Preis, den er hier, am Eingang zum Jenseits, dafür zahlen muss, ist hoch: Er wird nicht als Mensch, sondern als Monster zu seiner Frau zurückkehren.

Gabimarus ehemalige Shinobi-Kameraden haben es in all dem Chaos auf der Insel nicht nur auf das Lebenselixier abgesehen, sondern hauptsächlich auf ihn selbst! Währenddessen stellen die neu angekommenen Asaemon ihre Kameraden zur Rede. Shion, Fuchi und Sagiri müssen sich entscheiden: Wollen sie die Verbrecher, die ihnen im gemeinsamen Kampf gegen die Tensen ans Herz gewachsen sind, ans Messer liefern oder ihr eigenes Todesurteil unterschreiben

Mitten im tödlichen Dschungel entdecken Gabimaru und sein aus der Not geborenes Team ein kleines Mädchen. Wie konnte die Kleine hier überleben? Ist sie eine Eingeborene? Doch bevor sie Antworten auf diese Fragen finden, werden sie von einer Baumkreatur angegriffen, die das Mädchen zu beschützen scheint. Nicht, dass die Kleine das nötig hätte, denn als Gabimaru sie einfangen will, teilt sie einen ungeheuren Schlag gegen ihn aus. Ist sie überhaupt ein Mensch?

Wie zwei tollwütige Hunde verbeißen sich Gabimaru und Chobe ineinander. Ein bestialischer Kampf, bei dessen Brutalität alle Umherstehenden zurückweichen. Doch nicht nur Sand und Steine wirbeln die beiden bei ihrer Auseinandersetzung auf, sondern auch ihre eigenen Zweifel und Gefühle. Ihre blinde Wut aufeinander wirft das Tao der beiden aus der Balance und droht ihr Leben zu beenden, noch bevor der eine dem anderen die Kehle zerfetzen kann.

Sagiri, Yuzuriha und Senta stellen sich dem Tensen, der das Tor zum Zentrum der Insel bewacht. Wie oft sie ihm auch den Kopf abschlagen oder ihn aufspießen, in Sekundenschnelle regeneriert er sich wieder. Nicht einmal Yuzuhiras Kampftechniken, die sich der mystischen Kraft des Tao bedienen, können ihm etwas anhaben. Sie werden diesen Kampf nur überleben können, wenn sie die Wurzel seiner Kraft finden und ausreißen, bevor er jeden von ihnen vernichtet hat.

Gabimaru, der „Seelenlose“, wartet in seiner Zelle auf die Hinrichtung. Die Scharfrichterin Sagiri erkennt seinen Überlebenswillen und gibt ihm eine zweite Chance: Er soll auf einer gefährlichen Insel das „Elixier der Unsterblichkeit“ finden. Doch das Eiland ist voller Gefahren, und bisher kehrte niemand lebend zurück.

Nicht nur sind Gabimaru und die anderen inzwischen am Ende ihrer Kräfte angelangt, nein, ihre letzte Gegnerin Lien ist auch noch um ein Vielfaches stärker als die bisherigen Tensen. Den Überlebenden bleibt nichts anderes übrig, als Lien langsam zu zermürben. Doch die Taktik geht nicht auf und einer nach dem anderen unterliegt. Am Ende wird das Orakel also doch recht behalten: nur zwei Männer und eine Frau werden übrigbleiben ...

Die göttliche Blume Pangu gerät außer Kontrolle und ihr Maul aus abertausend Blüten und Ranken verschlingt den gesamten Palastkomplex. Im Bauch der nun lebendigen Insel gefangen, sehen sich die Überlebenden der Gruppe um Gabimaru und Sagiri einer weiteren Gefahr gegenüber. Sobald die Sonne aufgeht und die Blume erblüht, ist ihr Schicksal besiegelt. Doch wie sollen sie entkommen, wenn alles um sie herum Teil ihres gigantischen Gegners ist?
