Gdansk, capital of the Gdansk province has played an important role in the history of both neighboring states and especially of Poland throughout its thousand year history. Its convenient location, where Poland's principal river - the Vistula - meets the Baltic Sea has shaped the city's character, and has made it one of the most energetic centres of trade in this region of Europe. The prosperity of Gdansk is reflected in its art and architecture, which give us an impression of the city's former beauty, despite the destruction caused by World War II in 1945.
