      Podľa tureckého príslovia len Satan chváli sám seba. Vskutku je na tom veľa pravdy. Autori autobiografií sa často utiekajú k samochvále. Ak som sa napriek tomu podujal na napísanie týchto memoárov, viedli ma predovšetkým dva dôvody. Po prvé, chcel som domácemu čitateľovi ukázať, že nezlomnosť a vytrvalosť - cnosti, ktoré mi pomohli prekonať stredoázijské dobrodružstvá - sú úzko previazané so strádaniami a bojmi mojej mladosti. Moje putovanie po Oriente preto zďaleka nie je hodné takého obdivu, akého sa mu civilizovanom svete dostalo. Človek ľahšie znáša útrapy, ak si na ne zvykol už v detstve. Navyše, potrebné je zohľadiť aj duch doby, v ktorej som vyrastal a vplyv intelektuálnych prúdov, ktoré u nás vtedy vznikali a rozvíjali svoje krídla. Práve tie ma inšpirovali k nastúpeniu na moju výnimočnú životnú dráhu.
