Miláčik je príbeh o láske. O láske dosť nevšednej a čudnej, o "smiešnej" láske. Ľúbostné vzťahy medzi pôvabným mladým dievčaťom a zrelým prešediveným mužom poznáme nadostač nielen z literatúry ... Mimoriadne krásny mládenec sa zapletie so zrelou, ešte vždy príťažlivou ženou, ktorá však už — aj keď to sama tají — stojí na prahu päťdesiatky. Jemný a presný, citlivý a pritom aj trocha ironický, teda typicky francúzsky prístup slávnej Colette, azda najväčšieho zjavu medzivojnovej francúzskej prózy, vyčaril z tejto zápletky viac ako bizarnú ľúbostnú historku. Colette sa zahľadela do najskrytejších hlbín duše oboch svojich hrdinov a postupne za predstieraným ľahtikárstvom oboch — bývalej kurtizány a nezodpovedného "vydržiavaného" mládenca — objavuje nielen hlbokú túžbu po ozajstných ľudských vzťahoch, po čistote, ale aj tragický pocit nenávratného času, neúprosný tieň smrti. Lea, krásna kurtizána, sa napokon musí zmieriť s neodvratnou starobou, takisto ako jej Miláčik s dospelosťou, so zodpovednosťou nielen za seba, ale aj za iných — za svoju mladučkú ženu. Colette nepatrila k nijakej z početných literárnych skupín svojich čias, bola a ostala iba sama sebou: spisovateľkou ustavične hľadajúcou dokonalejší, vybrúsenejší tvar a výraz pre svoj múdry, chápavý, zdravým senzualizmom preniknutý pohľad na svet.

Colettin románek či novela dvou dospívajících dětí, zasazený do rámce krásné přímořské krajiny, bývá často srovnáván se starobylým příběhem o Dafnisovi a Chloé. Hrdinové, Vinka a Fil, jsou v Colettině podání nejen zamilovanou dvojicí, ale reprezentují plně mladé lidi z konce 19. století.

In the last in the series of Colette's Claudine books, we find Claudine separated from her tubercular husband, Renaud, who is recuperating in a Swiss hospital. She goes to the countryside to stay with her friend, Annie, and experiences relief from her depression in the pleasures of the natural world-- and in encouraging her friend to have an affair. RETREAT FROM LOVE was written a few years after the four original Claudine tales, and rumor has it that Colette wrote it to have a small revenge on her first husband, Monsieur Willy, on whom Renaud (who dies in the end) was apparently based.

Focusing on the themes of childhood and familial bonds, the narrative explores the life of Sido, a nurturing mother in late-nineteenth-century rural France. Chéri, together with The Last of Chéri, is a classic story of a love affair between a very young man and a charming older woman. The amour between Fred Peloux, the beautiful gigolo known as Chéri, and the courtesan Léa de Lonval tenderly depicts the devotion that stems from desire, and is an honest account of the most human preoccupations of youth and middle age. With compassionate insight Colette paints a full-length double portrait using an impressionistic style all her own.
