Joshua Slocum bol moreplavec, dobrodruh a spisovateľ. Preslávil sa ako prvý človek, ktorý sólofúkal okolo sveta. Jeho kniha inšpirovaná touto cestou sa stala medzinárodným bestsellerom. Slocumov príbeh je svedectvom ľudskej odvahy a túžby po objavovaní.
Keď kapitán Slocum roku 1898 oboplával svet, mal už skoro 55 rokov. Usadil sa na suchej zemi, ale mora sa nevzdal - každoročne sa vydával na Sprayi na dlhé osamelé plavby. Z jednej se už nevrátil a o jeho konci sa nič nevie. Merrien o tom píše: "Na jeseň roku 1909 (mal vtedy 65 rokov) ako obyčajnevyplával z Bristolu ... opäť na juh. Spray bola v dokonalom stave a Slocum sa tešil výbornému zdraviu. Odvážneho moreplavca už nikto nevidel. Vyslovovali sa všemožné dohady. Smršť? Nijakú v tom čase nehlásili. Choroba? V takom prípade by sa bola musela nájsť aspoň Spray. Ale aj tá zmizla so svojím pánom. Oheň na palube? Alebo zrážka s veľkou loďou? Zdá sa, že posledná hypotéza je najpravdepodobnejšia, lebo trasa, ktorou Slocum plával, bola už vtedy plná rýchlych parníkov a ich stráže nebývali vždy príliš bdelé. Jedno je isté: Slocum zahynul na mori, smrťou hodnou veľkého moreplavca."
