Karl Ludwig von Bertalanffy bol rakúsko-americký biológ a jeden zo zakladateľov všeobecnej teórie systémov (GST). Jeho práca sa zamerala na skúmanie otvorených systémov, ako sú živé organizmy, a navrhol, že klasické termodynamické zákony platia pre uzavreté systémy, ale nie nevyhnutne pre otvorené. Bertalanffyho matematický model rastu organizmov zostáva v platnosti dodnes.
