Po úspešných románoch Ragtime a Jazero potáplic dostáva sa do rúk čitateľa skoršie dielo E. L. Doctorowa Vitajte v Ťažkých Časoch. Tak ako autorova neskoršia tvorba, v ktorej spracúva úseky z nedávnych či trochu dávnejších amerických dejín, aj tento román sa vyznačuje novátorským prístupom, tvorivým spájaním historických udalostí a postáv s umeleckým výmyslom, pomáhajúcim odhaliť ich skutočný rozmer a zmysel. Za témou siahol Doctorow do čias legendami opradeného pionierskeho osídľovania Divokého západu a v príbehu jednej osady vytvoril netypický western s dramatickým nábojom, ktorý ma zároveň všeobecnejšiu, symbolickú platnosť a ktorý pre jeho mnohovýznamovosť možno čítať viacerými spôsobmi: ako realistický príbeh z čias kolonizácie Západu, ako psychologickú štúdiu o zhubných účinkoch násilia na ľudské vedomie, ako polemiku s vypätým individualizmom a jeho úlohou pri formovaní niekdajšej, i dnešnej, podoby americkej spoločnosti alebo ako podobenstvo o nezničiteľnosti ľudskej nádeje. A možno ho jednoducho čítať ako kultivovaný, literárne hodnotný western.

Odohrávajú sa tridsiate roky nášho storočia. V New Yorku sa koná Svetová výstava, ktorá zanechala hlboké dojmy vo vtedy desaťročnom chlapcovi Edgarovi, za ktorým sa skrýva sám autor E. L. Doctorow. To ony ho inšpirovali, aby napísal román. Spracoval ich do minuciózneho obrazu rokov prežitých vNew Yorku v Spojených štátoch na planéte Zem. Hrdina románu začína svoje rozprávanie od najranejších detských dojmov, a ako rastie, rozširuje sa aj jeho záber. Od matky, otca, brata, starej mamy a ostatných príbuzných prechádza ku kamarátom, okolitému svetu, technickým vynálezom, politickým udalostiam, prvej detskej láske a prvému krutému stretnutiu s rasovou nenávisťou. Na vykreslenie tohto všetkého si Doctorow zvolil zaujímavú kompozíciu. Celý príbeh rozprávajú jednotlivé postavy románu v krátkych kapitolkách, ktoré majú dokonale ucelenú formu - pripomínajú rodinné portréty v oválnych rámoch. Najnovšie dielo popredného amerického spisovateľa E. L. Doctorowa prekvapí čitateľa svojím lyrizmom. Napriek tomu je napísané v intenciách doterajšej autorovej tvorby, aspoň tej, ktorú náš čitateľ dôverne pozná z románov u nás preložených - Ragtime a Jazero potáplic.

Po úspešnom románe amerického spisovateľa E. L. Doctorowa Ragtime (1975) sa slovenský čitateľ stretáva s jeho ďalším dielom Jazero potáplic. Príbeh sa odohráva v krízových tridsiatych rokoch. Hrdina románu Joe je inteligentný, ctižiadostivý chlapec s dobrodružnými sklonmi. Pochádza z chudobnej robotníckej rodiny. Zhnusený duševnou i hmotnou biedou svojho okolia, ubíjajúcim prostredím i bezperspektívnou budúcnosťou uteká z domu, aby sa na vlastnej koži presvedčil o tom, že Amerika je krajina neobmedzených možností. Román má náročnú kompozíciu: preplietajú sa v ňom dve dejové línie v rôznych časových rovinách. Drsné naturalistické scény sa striedajú s poetickými pasážami, s intímnymi osobnými výpoveďami jednotlivých hrdinov. Integrálnu súčasť románu tvoria i akési voľné verše s kusými autobiografickými údajmi. Autor využíva strhujúci rytmus a prekvapujúce obrazy, mení osobu rozprávača. Román Jazero potáplic je zrelým majstrovským dielom, prinášajúcim pútavý obraz života Ameriky medzi dvoma svetovými vojnami. Doctorow sa profesionálne zaoberá literatúrou, prednáša na Princetonskej univerzite.
