Herodotove Dejiny sú prvým zachovaným dielom gréckej historiografie. Opísal v nich základný konflikt medzi Perzskou ríšou a Gréckom – tzv. grécko-perzské vojny. Okrem základného konfliktu opísal aj predchádzajúce udalosti, dejiny jednotlivých národov (Médi, Peržania, Egypťania, Skýti, Gréci), ktorých sa konflikt týkal a často používal aj opisy jednotlivých krajín, ktoré poznal väčšinou z vlastných ciest (Malá Ázia, Egypt – II. kniha). Zatiaľ čo Peržanov označil za národ, ktorý sa podriaďuje despotickej moci svojich kráľov, u Grékov si cení predovšetkým ich lásku k slobode a demokracii. Ako hlavné udalosti opísal predovšetkým jónske povstanie v Malej Ázii, priebeh grécko-perzských vojen a bitku pri Termopylách. Dielo rozdelil do deviatich kníh a každú nazval menom jednej z Múz.
