Ide fakticky o prvý Kantov spis, v ktorom sa venuje problémom morálky a morálneho konania. Základy sú podľa samého autora vyhľadaním a určením najvyššieho princípu morálnosti a vo svojom zámere sú iba jedinou ucelenou a od všetkých ostatných mravných skúmaní oddeliteľnou záležitosťou. Kant tu sformuloval dôvody rozumu pre mravné konanie ako kategorický imperatív.
