Svojou otvorenosťou k ľudskej sexualite a kritikou dobových spoločenských a náboženských noriem vyvolal v svojej dobe kontroverzie. Jeho učenie, ktoré čerpalo z rôznych globálnych filozofických a mystických tradícií, sa zameriavalo na dosiahnutie osvietenia prostredníctvom osobnej skúsenosti a aktívnej účasti na živote. Jeho vplyv na západné New Age myslenie je značný a jeho popularita od jeho smrti vzrástla.
