Jeho první anglické vydání z roku 1881 (přeložené zároveň i do sinhalštiny) poskytovalo v 171 otázkách a odpovědích mladým Cejloncům, odchovaným křesťanskými misijními školami, základní poučení o Buddhově nauce, jejíž znalost začala v té době znepokojivě upadat. Díky přístupné formě výkladu a populární volbě otázek a odpovědí získal katechismus široký čtenářský ohlas, dočkal se téměř 40 vydání a byl přeložen do více než 20 jazyků. Autor text postupně rozšířil na 386 otázek a opatřil jej svými výklady a komentáři, které jsou ovlivněny jeho teosofickým přesvědčením.
