Pán Stevens niekoľko desaťročí pracoval ako komorník v Darlington Halle, najprv u lorda Darlingtona, neskôr u bohatého Američana Farradaya, ktorý si sídlo kúpil. Na ceste po Anglicku rozjíma nad hodnotami a tradíciami v povojnovom Anglicku, keď sa starý svet so svojimi istotami rúca, nad vzťahom k otcovi, ktorý tiež bol v Darlington Halle komorníkom, no najmä nad podstatou pojmu dôstojnosť, ktorá podľa Stevensa odlišuje mimoriadne kompetentných komorníkov od tých „veľkých“ a je to dar od prírody tak ako ženská krása. Stevens sa napokon naozaj so slečnou Kentonovou stretne. Toto stretnutie odhalí príbeh nešťastnej lásky dvoch ľudí, ktorí sa celý život milovali, napriek tomu sa medzi nimi nevyvinul iný než profesionálny vzťah, a to pre Stevensovo úsilie byť lojálnym, „dôstojným“ komorníkom bez štipky emócií či nároku na vlastné úvahy o povahe sveta a osobný život.
