Jeho priateľ, vážený kupec Antonio sa zaňho zaručí u starého úžerníka Shylocka a hoci potrebné peniaze pre Bassania získa, dostane sa do ťažkostí, lebo pôžičku nedokáže vrtátiť včas. Chamtivý Shylock trvá na dodržaní podmienok dohody a cena, ktorú má Antonio zaplatiť, je naozaj vysoká. Z anglického originálu The Merchant of Venice (The Arden Edition of the Works of William Shakespeare, London 2004) preložil a sprievodné texty napísal Ľubomír Feldek.
