Jedni hovorili, že je to ponorka a druhí tvrdili, že sa jedná o doposiaľ neznámeho tvora. Američania vyslali na more fregatu, ktorá mala záhadu objasniť. Výpravy sa zúčastnil aj profesor Aronnax so svojim sluhom, ktorí sa na lodi zoznámili s harpunárom Nedom. Výprava bola dlho neúspešná, až raz večer zbadala posádka svetelnú žiaru vychádzajúcu kúsok od lode. Fregata sa pokúsila tvora prenasledovať. Zrazu sa však obluda otočila a plávala smerom k lodi, s ktorou sa vzápätí zrazila. Profesor, jeho sluha a Ned spadli pri náraze do vody. Zachránili sa na chrbte obludy z ktorej vyliezli štyria muži, vtiahli ich dovnútra a uväznili v tmavej komore. Nasledujúci deň ich tam navštívil kapitán Nemo a oznámil im že sa nachádzajú v ponorke Nautilus, ktorú nesmú opustiť. Ako nedobrovoľní cestujúci prežili pri podmorskej plavbe neuveriteľné príhody.
