Príbeh rozpráva o dievčati menom Alícia, ktoré spadne do králičej nory a ocitne sa vo fantastickom svete obývanom zvláštnymi, antropomorfnými bytosťami. Alícia je zvedavá a hľadá dobrodružstvo, pričom sa stretáva s rôznymi podivnými postavami, ako sú Hatter, Cheshire Cat a kráľovná srdcová. Kniha skúma témy identity, logiky a absurdity, pričom Alícia prechádza rôznymi surrealistickými situáciami, ktoré vyzývajú jej chápanie reality. Príbeh je známy svojou hravou jazykovou hrou a fantastickými obrazmi, ktoré podnecujú čitateľovu predstavivosť. Na svojráznom Iónskom ostrove býva doktor Jannis, miestny lekár samouk, so svojou na tie časy nekonvenčne vychovanou dcérou Pelagiou.
