Autorom tejto knihy je naozaj Jimi Hendrix. Ale keďže táto kniha bola zostavená posmrtne, mali by sme objasniť, ako sme dospeli k jej konečnej podobe. V istom zmysle to bol vlastne jeho nápad. Pracovali sme na životopisnom filme. Nechceli sme však Jimimu vkladať do úst slová, ktoré nikdy nevyslovil, a tak sme sa rozhodli, že skúsime spracovať iba to, čo skutočne povedal. Nakoniec sme zhromaždili obrovskú kopu materiálu z mnohých zdrojov, o ktorých hodnovernosti nemožno pochybovať. Bolo toho naozaj veľa, pretože Jimi počas svojho štvorročného života na výslní poskytol nesčíselné množstvo rozhovorov. Okrem toho si rád robil poznámky, používal doslova všetko – hotelový hlavičkový papier, cigaretové škatuľky, zdrapy papiera a dokonca vreckovky, jednoducho čo bolo poruke. A hoci mnohé z toho už bolo publikované, vždy sa tak stalo s úmyslom potvrdiť isté predstavy o jeho živote a hudbe. Pri skúmaní dostupných podkladov sme si uvedomili, že Jimi nám všetko podstatné povie aj sám, no informácie sú útržkovité a niekedy nejasné. Vtedy sme si predsavzali, že uprostred mnohých mýtov a povier necháme prehovoriť samotného Jimiho, aby nám podal svoj vlastný pohľad na život a tvorbu.
