Benner asks and answers the question, "How might we discipline our wills so that we become both willing and able to do what God asks of us?"
Psychologist and spiritual director David G. Benner illuminates the spirituality of self-discovery. He shows how understanding yourself leads you to better discern God's purposes for you, and, paradoxically, how becoming more like Christ allows you to become more fully yourself.
This study attempts to identify the religious roots of psychotherapy and surveys the views of spirituality found in a broad range of psychologies such as Jung, Kierkegaard and May. The author reviews the history and understanding of spirituality found in a variety of Christian traditions from the Desert Fathers to Evangelical Spirituality. He attempts therefore to present a model of personality as a psychospiritual unity. Benner has published "The Baker Encyclopedia of Psychology", "Psychotherapy in Christian Perspective", "Psychology and Religion" and "Christian Counselling and Psychotherapy".
