Co w tej książce jest prawdą, a co tworem wyobraźni pisarza? Czy rzeczywiście mamy do czynienia z autentycznym, odnalezionym w weneckiej lagunie opowiadaniem Henry’ego Jamesa, czy ze znakomicie podrobionym apokryfem? Powieść Maurensiga jest książką trzyplanową. Jest w niej historia odnalezionego, niewydanego nigdy utworu Jamesa i pracy bohatera nad uratowaniem – odtworzeniem – zniszczonego tekstu, jest „Anagalis”, właściwa nowela Jamesa (Maurensiga?) o miłości i szukaniu piękna (albo odwrotnie), jest wreszcie związany z nią fragment biografii amerykańskiego pisarza, jego związku z Konstancją Woolson. Wszystkie trzy – bardzo przemyślnie powiązane – dają niezwykle wciągającą opowieść, rozgrywającą się w samym sercu wiecznie pięknej Wenecji. Il "canone inverso" è nel linguaggio tecnico musicale, una forma di fuga molto più complessa, perché non è basata sulla ripetizione dello stesso tema. A Vienna per la stagione concertistica, il narratore della storia incontra un suonatore ambulante in una taverna di Grinzing. Un po' per scherzo, un po' per scherno, gli chiede un pezzo difficilissimo: una ciaccona di Bach. L'ambulante la esegue alla perfezione, stende il cappello e riceve una ricca mancia dallo stupito ascoltatore. Il giorno dopo lo scrittore incontra di nuovo il singolare musicista che gli rivolge una domanda: ha mai raccontato una storia ambientata nel mondo della musica? Lui ne conosce una forte e misteriosa: una storia terribile. In seguito a quali disavventure un artista eccelso si è ridotto a trascinare per bettole e osterie un talento che avrebbe potuto aprirgli i palcoscenici dei teatri più celebri del mondo? Qual è la forza terribile che è entrata nella sua vita?
