Rozprávačom je Nick Carraway, ktorého sused je James Gatz, záhadný boháč pochybnej povesti. Dej románu Zbohom zbraniam (1929), prvého z hemingwayových bestsellerov, sa odohráva na talianskom fronte počas prvej svetovej vojny. Rozpráva príbeh lásky amerického poručíka, vodiča sanitky Červeného kríža Frederica Henryho a talianskej zdravotnej sestry Catherine Barkleyovej na pozadí krvavýchbojov. Catherine ošetruje raneného Henryho a ich láska sa naplní, Catherine čaká dieťa. Henry sa vracia na front, ale čoraz väčšmi presvedčený o nezmyselnosti vojny rozhodne sa aj so svojou láskou ujsť. Príbeh so zjavnými autobiografickými prvkami sa končí tragicky, Catherine aj dieťa umierajú.

Rozum a cit je jedným z najznámejších románov anglickej literatúry a prvou vydanou knihou Jane Austenovej. Príbeh sestier Marianny a Elinor Dashwoodových sa odohráva v prostredí a atmosfére staroanglického vidieka a svojím vtipom a pôvabom okúzľuje čitateľov už viac ako dve storočia. Dve hlavné hrdinky sa po smrti svojho otca musia vyrovnať so stratou spoločenského postavenia a ako všetky nemajetné dievčatá v tej dobe majú šancu sa z ťažkej situácie dostať pravdepodobne len výhodným sňatkom. Marianna podľahne kúzlu mladíka menom Willoughby, pričom sa zdá, že ich náklonnosť je vzájomná. To sleduje so znepokojením plukovník Brandon, rodinný priateľ, ktorý sa sám láskou k Marianne trápi. Willoughbymu navyše vôbec nedôveruje a má podozrenie, že o jeho minulosti vie niečo zlé. Staršia sestra Elinor nadviaže vzťah s Edwardom Ferrarsem, jeho rodina si však pre neho praje zámožnejšiu partiu a snaží sa vzťah s Elinor prekaziť. Edward sa zdá byť charakterným a poctivým mužom, no od istej chvíle sa začne k Elinor správať odtažite. Okrem toho, že dievčatá narážajú na tuhé konvencie vo svojom okolí, bojujú aj so svojimi rozdielnymi povahami. Citovo založená Marianna sa dokáže spontánne a vášnivo poddať emóciám, zatiaľ čo rezervovanejšia Elinor sa snaží svoje city skrývať, aby neobťažovala svoje okolie. Obidve musia svoje postoje časom pod vplyvom udalostí zmeniť.
