Málo kdo ví, že Las Vegas - mekka hazardních hráčů - vzniklo vlastně náhodou. Mohou za to prudérní radní Hollywoodu a Los Angeles, kteří v těchto městech zakázali provozovat hazardní hry. Benjamin Siegel alias Bugsy se ale vynašel. Gangstr z povolání se nemínil jen tak vzdát svých zisků. I když nebyl zrovna chudý, záhy se stal nejbohatším mužem celých Spojených států. Bugsy žil naplno; večírky, vily, obchody, milenky - hollywoodské hvězdy i hvězdičky - až pokud se nesetkal s ženou svého života Virginií Hillovou, ale také s mafií, která mu tohle všechno nemohla jen tak dopřát. A proto jeho život kořenily také honičky, úniky, střelba i politika. Není divu, že po tomto díle, napsaném na základě výpovědi Bugsyho přátel, a prostudování soudobých novinových zpráv, sáhl i filmový průmysl a snímek se stejnojmenným názvem obletěl celý svět.
