Dnes už kultový román Opýtaj sa prachu, medzičasom sfilmovaný v Hollywoode, sa pri príležitosti 80 rokov od prvého vydania dočkal aj slovenského prekladu. Fante (1909-1983) patrí k najvýraznejším hlasom americkej literatúry 20.storočia, literárnu slávu a uznanie však získal až po smrti. Záujem o jeho dielo sa zrodil najmä v 80. rokoch, a to aj zásluhou jeho obdivovateľov, ku ktorým patrili spisovateľ Charles Bukowski, scenárista Robert Towne či režisér Francis Ford Coppola.

Detektív Harry Bosch mal po vyriešení svojho posledného prípadu v knihe Mesto kostí všetkého akurát tak dosť a odišiel na zaslúžený dôchodok. Keďže však tušil, že policajná práca ho len tak nepustí, zobral si stoh spisov s nevyriešenými prípadmi. K jednému z nich sa po niekoľkých mesiacoch ničnerobenia rozhodol vrátiť, pretože ho o to nepriamo požiadal kolega. V prípade išlo o mladú ženu z hollywoodskej produkčnej firmy, ktorú zavraždili tesne pred lúpežným prepadom počas nakrúcania filmu o lúpežnom prepade. Bosch prípad vyšetroval len pár dní, po prepade (jedného z nikdy neodhalených lúpežníkov dokonca zasiahol streľbou) mu prípad odobrali a pridelili kolegovi Lawtonovi Crossovi z oddelenia lúpeží a vrážd. Harry sa s vervou pustí do sledovania štyri roky starých stôp, ktoré ho nečakane zavedú k agentke FBI, ktorá zmizla tesne po tom, ako sa okrajovo zaplietla do prípadu.

Harry Bosch je späť a dostáva naraz dva prípady. Prvý súvisí s obvinením z roku 1989, no súčasná analýza DNA potvrdila, že usvedčujúci dôkaz, kvapka krvi, patrí niekoľkokrát trestanému násilníkovi, čo sedí za mrežami. Problém je však v tom, že gauner mal v čase zločinu len osem rokov. Bosch sa teda púšťa do vyšetrovania. Zároveň mu opäť do cesty vstúpi Irvin Irving. Jeho syn vypadol z okna a Harry dostal za úlohu zistiť, či išlo o samovraždu, alebo o čosi iné. Intuícia Boscha ani teraz nesklame, za oboma prípadmi sa skrýva kopec špiny a nečakaných zápletiek.

Všetko sa začne telefonátom na Nový rok. Ktosi oznámi detektívovi Harrymu Boschovi, že počas prechádzky pes vyhrabal kosť, ktorá vyzerá ako ľudská. Vďaka tejto príšernej náhode Bosch objaví plytký hrob na hollywoodskych kopcoch, ktorý je dôkazom dávnej vraždy. Pátranie v starých policajných a nemocničných archívoch, ktoré Harrymu oživí v pamäti vlastné smutné detstvo, ho privedie k násilnému, krvavému zločinu z minulosti.
