La raccolta di componimenti in versi e in prosa di Piero Jahier nasce dall'esperienza dell'autore come tenente istruttore di un reparto di alpini durante il primo conflitto mondiale. È un diario di guerra scritto al fronte, tra il marzo del 1916 e il luglio del 1917, ma è anche un diario di vita e di valori indelebili e un unicum dal punto di vista letterario, che alterna squarci lirici e poetici a momenti narrativi.
