Stalinov chránenec, skladateľ, ktorý úspešne reprezentoval totalitnú moc v zahraničí a ktorého tá istá moc trýznila a označovala za nepriateľa ľudu. Šostakovič je ústrednou postavou knihy, ktorá si nenárokuje byť biografiou, ale plnohodnotným románom a ktorá krátko po vydaní vyvolala rozporuplné reakcie medzi muzikológmi a obdivovateľmi Šostakoviča.
