Joanna Cole bola autorkou kníh pre deti a učiteľkou prírodných vied. Je najviac známa ako autorka série kníh pre deti The Magic School Bus. Jej tvorba zahŕňa viac ako 250 kníh, od jej prvej knihy Cockroach po slávnu sériu The Magic School Bus. Coleová sa narodila v Newarku v New Jersey a vyrastala v neďalekom East Orange. Ako dieťa milovala vedu a mala učiteľku, ktorá jej pripomínala pani Frizzleovú. Vyštudovala City College of New York, kde získala bakalársky titul z psychológie. Po absolvovaní postgraduálnych kurzov pracovala rok ako knihovníčka na základnej škole v New Yorku.
