Hra Malíři ze šachty (The Pitmen Painters, 2007) vychází ze skutečného příběhu takzvané Ashingtonské skupiny – společenství převážně horníků, kteří se sešli roku 1934 ve večerním kurzu dějin výtvarného umění, bez základních znalostí a de facto i hlubšího zájmu o předmět. Jejich učitel, zvyklý pracovat s univerzitními studenty, přistoupil po počáteční marné snaze o nalezení společné řeči k experimentu – vyzval je, aby zkusili sami něco namalovat.
