Německý luterský theolog Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1945 popravený nacisty) po celých dvanáct let vzdoroval totalitnímu režimu, který byl otevřeně protižidovský a skrytě protikřesťanský. Oponoval mu církevně i občansky, modlitbou i činem: když zpíval gregoriánský chorál a zachraňoval Židy, když se, zapojen do příprav protihitlerovského puče, modlil za vojenskou porážku své vlasti. Toto vydání Bonhoefferových listů z vězení je revizí překladu, který vyšel česky pod názvem Na cestě k svobodě: listy z vězení v r. 1991. Toto vydání obsahuje jak vzájemnou korespondenci Bonhoeffera a jeho přítele Eberharda Bethgeho, tak i listy jeho rodičů, a je doplněné o části dopisů, které byly v českém vydání vynechané. Jde o pasáže, které tematizovaly vzájemný vztah Bonhoeffera a Bethgeho, jakož i vztah Bonhoeffera k jeho snoubence. Cílem bylo představit Bonhoeffera nejen jako vizionářského teologa a mučedníka, ale také jako člověka s blízkými, intimními vztahy.Z německého originálu Widerstand und Ergebung. Briefe und Aufzeichnungen aus der Haft přeložili Miloš Černý, Miroslav Heryán, Jiří Šamšula a Jan Šimsa, básně přeložili Václav Renč a Robert Novotný. Revizi překladu, překlad chybějících částí a poznámek zhotovil Jiří Šamšula, studii o Bonhoefferovi napsal Jan Štefan.

Dne 9. dubna 1945 – ve chvílích, kdy statisícům válkou ohrožených lidí se naděje na přežití stávala takřka jistotou – se uzavřel život mladého, ale už vynikajícího teologa Dietricha Bonhoeffera. Byl popraven za účast na spiknutí proti Hitlerovi.
