Z nejrůznějších pramenů – z interwiev jejích různých známých, dopisů a dokumentů se postupně dovídá podrobnosti jejího osudu, poznamenaném válkou. Leně po krátkém manželství zahyne manžel a ona navazuje vztah s ruským válečným zajatcem. Její poválečné osudy pak výrazně ovlivňuje morální a společenská atmosféra a mezilidské vztahy přežívající v Německu až do sedmdesátých let a silně poznamenané stigmaty válečné porážky. Podobne ako v iných dielach, uvádza Böll aj v Skupinovom portréte s dámou rozličné názory a postoje ľudí. Vytvoril tu rozprávača, ktorý sa ako „autor“ románu sústreďuje na postavu Leny Pfeifferovej, rodenej Gruytenovej, a od rozličných jej známych sa cez interview, listy a dokumenty dozvedá o jej osude, poznačenom nielen druhou svetovou vojnou, keď Lene po kratučkom manželstve zahynul muž a ona vo viazarní vencov nadviazala kontakt so sovietskym zajatcom Borisom, ale ovplyvnenom aj morálnou a spoločenskou problematikou občianskeho spolužitia v NSR do začiatku sedemdesiatich rokov.
