Dirk Struan, legendárna postava a predstaviteľ tvrdého škótskeho rodu, sa stáva zakladateľom mocnej firmy a triumfuje nad svojím hlavným konkurentom, no nie nad prírodou. V 19. storočí, po búrlivej ére podnikateľov, sa firma začína rozprestierať do Číny, Japonska a celej Juhovýchodnej Ázie. V roku 1941 však prichádza katastrofa, keď Japonci prekvapia svet a obsadia polovicu Číny a celý juhovýchod Ázie, vrátane Hongkongu.
