C'est sous les traits d'un simple valet suivant son riche seigneur que Fitz et le Fou ont entrepris de partir à la recherche du prince Devoir, disparu dans d'étranges circonstances. Ils sont accompagnés dans leur quête d'Oeil-de-nuit et de laurier, la confidente de la reine Kettricken. Ils ont huit jours pour retrouver la trace du fugitif. Mais ils vont bientôt s'apercevoir que la disparition du prince n'a rien d'une banale fugue. Si Fitz retrouve facilement sa trace à Myrteville grâce au lien qui l'unit à son animal, il va rapidement découvrir que le jeune héritier de la couronne, qu'il considère comme son fils, est sous l'emprise de forces maléfiques poursuivant de sombres visées sur les Six-Duchés...

Fitz Chivalric Weitseher, bekannt als Tom Dachsenbless, ist Teil des königlichen Hofstaats in Bocksburg. Nur wenige kennen seine legendäre Vergangenheit und seine Gabe. La narcheska Elliania a quitte avec ses hommes la cour de Castelcerf pour retourner sur ses îles d'outre-mer. Dans quelques mois, le prince Devoir la rejoindra pour y affronter un dragon, et tenir ainsi sa promesse. Fitzchevalerie, l'ancien assassin royal, dispose de ce laps de temps pour parvenir a créer autour de Devoir un clan d'artiseurs qui devra le protéger lors de ce voyage. Mais les candidats sont rares, et l'attention de Fitz est bientot requise ailleurs : les Pie continuent de mettre a mal l'action politique de la reine Kettricken en faveur des Vifiers. Et la rumeur voudrait que leur chef, le manchot Laudevin, soit de retour. Or Fitz sait pertinemment qu'il n'est pire ennemi que celui que l'on a mutile...

Le clan des Artiseurs qui s'est formé autour du prince Devoir progresse enfin : sous la houlette de Fitz Chevalerie, Lourd, Umbre et le prince Devoir lui-même développent leur maîtrise de l'art. Pas assez vite, cependant, au goût de Fitz, car l'heure de tenir ses promesses a sonné. Devoir et ses amis embarquent sur la flotte royale, afin de permettre au prince de mener sa quête : le dragon Glasfeu, prisonnier des glaces, doit mourir de sa main pour que devoir puisse épouser la Narcheska Elliania. Fitz prend alors conscience, dans les rêves qu'il partage avec sa fille Ortie, qu'un autre dragon s'intéresse de près à leur périple, et que celui-ci voit le projet du prince des six-duchés d'un très mauvais œil.

Ignorant tout des dangers qui pèsent sur elle, la jeune femme espère que Kyle Havre tiendra sa promesse et lui rendra sa Vivenef Vivacia, dont elle n'aurait jamais dû être dépouillée. Mais le destin a plus d'un tour dans son sac... Kyle ne possède plus la Vivacia, qui a été arraisonnée par le terrible pirate Kennit. Sa vie et celle de son fils Hiémain ne tiennent maintenant plus qu'à un fil, car le jeune homme doit amputer la jambe gangrenée de Kennit : si le pirate venait à mourir, Kyle et Hiémain passeraient immédiatement de vie à trépas !

Revenu très affaibli du royaume des Montagnes, Fitz doit désormais redécouvrir la vie de château... et ses complots. Si le roi-servant Vérité épuise ses forces et son Art pour repousser les Pirates rouges, son frère cadet Royal œuvre pour s'emparer du trône... Partagé entre sa loyauté pour ses souverains et son amour pour Molly, le bâtard princier est tiraillé entre liberté et devoir, spontanéité et raison, insouciance et maturité. Comment se venger de Royal sans trahir la couronne ? Est-il en droit de faire usage du Vif, sans pour autant trahir son Art et sa lignée ?
