Novela je rozčleněna do tří oddílů. Každý se pokouší nastínit možné pozadí a souvislosti tří odlišných, avšak podobně velmi temných událostí. První část za své východisko bere známou fotografii, na které sup číhá na podvyživené súdánské dítě; druhá část přibližuje okolnosti smrti Paula Celana, který se dobrovolně utopil v pařížské Seině; třetí pak pojednává o příčinách a následcích zatčení německého básníka Hölderlina na základě obvinění ze spiklenectví.Tyto konkrétní momenty jsou brány jen jako orientační body, kolem nichž je vybudován barvitý obraz, který tvoří nenaplněné touhy, nepochopení, marnost a zmar, nemožnost nalézt sílu k roztržení dusivé pavučiny okolního světa.
