Green Carnations, Glas na Gile, published in 2020, is an anthology featuring verse from twenty-five LGBT+ poets from the island of Ireland. It explores the complexities of first loves, long-term partnerships, and sexual encounters. The poets navigate the rich terrain of individuality, presenting diverse voices that resonate with the raw essence of human existence within an LGBT+ context, rooted in experiences as old as creation itself. Contributors, identified by their first names or initials, range from late teens—some in their final Leaving Certificate Year 2020—to their thirties. The anthology reflects on the 2015 same-sex marriage referendum, a significant milestone celebrated in various poems. Each poet provides a short biography and introduces their work, with some opting for pseudonyms and incorporating artwork. The collection emphasizes the struggle for identity and the importance of individuality over editorial uniformity. While moments of shared serenity are captured, the anthology predominantly reflects the growing pains, loves, and enduring connections that characterize relationships. Ultimately, this anthology serves as a vibrant sharing among young voices, inviting readers to engage with their common future.
