Kapitán Wilhelm Johnen, narozený v roce 1921, začal svou vojenskou kariéru v květnu 1941 jako mladý poručík v německém nočním stíhacím letectvu. Popisuje svůj výcvik v létání podle přístrojů a první noční bojové lety u 1. eskadry nočních stíhačů ve Venlo a Šlesvicku. Po prvním nočním sestřelu byl sestřelen palubním střelcem bombardéru a po pobytu v lazaretu se vrátil ke své eskadře. V prosinci 1942 byl převeleli k III. skupině 6. eskadry nočních stíhačů, kde se podílel na obraně Hamburku a setkal se s novou taktikou RAF. Během nočního letu nad Berlínem v srpnu 1943 jeho skupina dosáhla dvaceti sestřelů a Johnen sám sestřelil čtyři bombardéry. Po různých převeleních získal zkušenosti s Me 262. Dne 28. dubna 1944 musel nouzově přistát ve Švýcarsku, ale vrátil se do Německa. V červnu 1944 byla jeho skupina nasazena na obranu Vídně a Budapešti, kde dosáhl 33 nočních sestřelů a 31. října 1944 obdržel Rytířský kříž. Dne 16. března 1945 dosáhl svého 34. a posledního sestřelu nad Würzburgem. Konec války zažil v Bad Aiblingu, kde zničil své letouny.
