Před mnoha lety Will Eisner marně hledal nakladatele pro své revoluční dílo, Smlouvu s Bohem. Komiksový román nakonec vyšel dosti nenápadně v roce 1978 a až později si získal obrovský věhlas, takže přinesl uspokojení nejen samotnému autorovi, ale také se stal inspirací pro celou generaci „sekvenčních umělců“. Svým dílem Žid Fagin se Will Eisner opětovně připomněl nejen jako mistrný tvůrce komiksových příběhů, ale rovněž jako pronikavý společenský a literární kritik.
