Autor ponúka čitatelovi životný príbeh Abela Tiffaugea, odohrávajúci sa v polovici dvadsiateho storočia. Tiffauges, frustrovaný a ponižovaný človek, nenávidí spoločnosť, v ktorej je nútený žiť, a vytvára si svoj vlastný svet a systém životnej filozofie. Príbeh, ktorý miestami hraničí s absurditou, je svojím posolstvom výsostne aktuálny aj dnes.

Loď neodvratne smeruje k stroskotanie. Podivínský kapitán vykladá Robinsonovi karty. Magické obrazy predznamenávajú sled premien, ktorými Robinson počas svojho života na ostrove prejde. Jeho pobyt na ostrove nebude len históriou prostého podmaňovanie, ostrov a samota zásadne premení Robinsona samého. Tournierův Robinson tak nie je snom o vláde nad vlastným kusom zeme, je zamyslením o podstate človeka, mýtom o zrodení nového človeka z „lona Pacifiku“. Piatok do príbehu vstupuje ako dieťa z iného sveta, ako božský sprievodca na Robinsonová ceste za nadľudským údelom.
