Warum fällt es uns so schwer, den abscheulichen Terroranschlag auf das World Trade Center in New York am 11. September 2001 zu verstehen? Im Versuch einer Antwort konfrontiert uns Baudrillard mit dem Unbewussten der westlichen Zivilisation. Haben wir nicht alle schon einmal von der Zerstörung der Macht geträumt? Haben wir nicht von diesem Geschehen geträumt, auch wenn wir es nie bewusst gewollt haben? Der Terrorismus hat unseren (Alb-)Traum in die Tat umgesetzt. Er hat das weithin sichtbare Symbol, das Zentrum der bestehenden Ordnung, das World Trade Center zerstört. Dort klafft nun eine Wunde, die wir nicht ertragen. Unser System akzeptiert nicht den Tod und vor allem keine Opfer an solch einem symbolischen Ort. DieZerstörung eines Symbols, das für sich genommen eine ganze Ordnung repräsentiert, verweist auf das Wesen des Terrorismus.

Baudrillard setzt auf die Macht der Illusion im positiven Sinne. Wenn heute mit künstlichen Mitteln jegliches Ende praktisch außer Kraft gesetzt werden kann, dann müssen wir wenigstens daran glauben, dass es ein Ende gibt. ‚Am Ende’ setzt Baudrillard auf die Pataphysik, die Wissenschaft von den imaginären Lösungen.

Le principe du mal n’est pas moral, c’est un principe de déséquilibre et de vertige, un principe de complexité et d’étrangeté, un principe de séduction, un principe d’incompatibilité, d’antagonisme et d’irréductibilité. Toute tentative de rachat de la part maudite, de rachat du principe du mal, ne peut qu’instaurer de nouveaux paradis artificiels. Analyser les systèmes contemporains dans leur forme catastrophique, dans leurs échecs, dans leurs apories, mais aussi dans la façon dont ils réussissent trop bien et se perdent dans le délire de leur propre fonctionnement, c’est faire ressurgir partout le théorème et l’équation de la part maudite, c’est vérifier partout sa puissance symbolique indestructible. » J. Per Baudrillard il valore di scambio simbolico è la fine dell'economia poiché viene dissolto l'oggetto concreto dello scambio. Ed è quindi anche la fine del marxismo. Baudrillard sposta la nozione di iperrealismo sul piano economico-sociale. Scompaiono le opposizioni tra verità e inganno, vita quotidiana e spettacolo. Il reale e la propria immagine si assomigliano perfettamente, sono una cosa sola. A esso si collega il simulacro. Se ciò che appare non ha più alcun riferimento alla realtà, ridotta ormai a un rimando di segni, è il simulacro stesso a prendere consistenza e anche valore positivo. Per Baudrillard la morte è pertanto una sfida radicale cui il sistema non può rispondere, ma al tempo stesso è un atto iperreale, un simulacro, che partecipa fino in fondo alla comunicazione spettacolare di massa.
