Príbehy zo života manželského, ktoré pôvodne vyšli na pokračovanie v dvoch knihách, vyvolali vo svojej dobe vášnivé debaty a autor sa dokonca ocitol pred súdom. Najprv na túto tému plánoval napísať román, ale nakoniec mu prišlo príhodnejšie látku rozložiť do dvoch desiatok noviel. Viac sa zradikalizoval v druhej časti, ktorej vydanie sa prelína s rozpadom jeho manželstva. Strindberg považoval manželstvo len za formálnu ochranu prostitúcie, prípadne za „klietku, do ktorej sa obaja partneri dobrovoľne zatvoria“. Z rousseaovského hľadiska odmietol emancipáciu a predstavil ženu ako parazita v manželstve. Napriek tomu, že je jeho dielo interpretované ako jednoznačne mizogýnne, väčšina jeho súčasníkov i dnešných literárnych kritikov oceňujú jeho netradičný pohľad na pokrytectvo, spoločenskú morálku, sexuálne správanie, prostitúciu a rodové stereotypy.

Z dnešních novin soudničky vymizely- až při přečtení Drdova souboru napadne čtenáře, jaká je to škoda. Drobné vtipné črty, připomínající Čapkovy "kapesní" povídky, jenže ze skutečného života, z jednání konkrétního pražského soudu konkrétního dne. Inu, hříšní lidé z města pražského a jejich osudy, půvabné i nostalgií jiného času, kdy jako by se žilo pomaleji a mírněji, kradlo, mordovalo a podvádělo nějak laskavěji a lidštěji.

Glajcha a Obětní kozel jsou dvě poprvé do češtiny přeložené novely tohoto věčného rebela, provokatéra, ale především zakladatele moderní švédské literatury, které sice tematicky těží z instituce manželství a ženské otázky, nicméně míra autentičnosti je v nich podstatně menší. Přestože je A. Strindberg spojován především se sociálním románem, v úvodní povídce se s touto tematikou setkáváme jen okrajově. To podstatné, a u Strindberga nové, je romantické snění hlavního hrdiny Alrika Lundstedta, který si vytváří svůj vlastní svět, jenž se chtě nechtě střetává s realitou. Další příběhy zasadil autor na ostrovy Paradín a Ostudec. Tím hlavním tématem zde již není vysněný svět hlavních postav, tady jde především o kontrasty. Paradín (hora dobrořečení) a Ostudec (hora zlořečení) skrývají pod falešnou maskou svou pravou tvář, takže záhy vyvstane otázka, kde je vlastně dobro a kde zlo.

Die Gesamtherstellung erfolgte in Gütersloh bei Mohndruck.Die Redaktion übernahmen Dr. Mathias Jung und Bernhard Pollmann. Die ursprünglichen Übersetzungen wurden teilweise für diese Reihe überarbeitet.

Mit dem Wunsch, das Orgelspiel zu erlernen, zieht der junge Alrik Lundstedt aus der Provinz nach Stockholm. Die Orgel der Jakobskirche, an der er unterrichtet wird, die Musik und nicht zuletzt Angelika – ein Mädchen, das er unter den Zuhörern in der Kirche entdeckt – beflügeln die Fantasie des träumerisch veranlagten Alrik maßlos; nie wagt er, sich Angelika zu nähern, aber in seiner Vorstellung wird sie seine Verlobte. Bald verschmelzen Traum und Wirklichkeit immer mehr, und als er sich gezwungen sieht, auf der Insel Rånö die Stelle eines Küsters anzunehmen, geht Alrik vollends in der Welt seiner Fantasie auf. Die kleine Novelle Strindbergs gilt als humoristisches Meisterstück unter seinen Schärenerzählungen, sie wurde berühmt für die imponierende Schilderung der Orgel, den modernen psychologischen Ansatz und die idyllisch-entrückte Mischung aus Dichtung und Leben.

"Leggete le mie semplici fiabe del 1903 e rendetevi conto voi stessi di dove ho fatto il mio apprendistato." Così, in un articolo del 1905, Strindberg ricorda la prima edizione della sua raccolta di fiabe, Sagor, in occasione del centenario della nascita di H.C. Andersen. Questa raccolta, scritta nel 1903 e presentata qui per la prima volta al pubblico italiano, appartiene alla piena maturità artistica di Strindberg e rappresenta l'unica incursione dell'autore in questo genere. "Strindberg riprende il suo gioco segreto di scrittore confessato nel romanzo," come scrive Alda Castagnoli Manghi nella sua introduzione, "e lo fa con tutta la libertà della fiaba, ma anche con sovrana indipendenza nei riguardi del genere. Non dissimula la realtà sotto il velo della fiaba, ma scompone, ricompone, separa e accosta ricordi, sensazioni, sogni e presentimenti 'come pezzi di una scatola di costruzioni'. Queste fiabe, a distanza di un secolo, conservano in ogni modo la loro efficacia di stile, colpiscono ancora l'immaginazione per la loro ricchezza inventiva e, soprattutto, restano a lungo nella memoria per la suggestione delle immagini visive."

In "Am offenen Meer" thematisiert August Strindberg die existenziellen Fragen des Lebens und die Suche nach Identität in einer von Unsicherheit geprägten Welt. Die Handlung entfaltet sich auf einem Schiff, wo die Protagonisten mit ihren inneren Konflikten und zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen konfrontiert werden. Strindbergs charakteristische Mischung aus Realismus und Symbolismus verleiht dem Werk eine tiefgründige Dimension, während die maritime Kulisse als Metapher für Freiheit und Isolation dient. Die komplexen Charaktere und ihre Dialoge reflektieren die menschliche Natur und die Herausforderungen des Daseins.
