Doktor vezme Romanu na prázdniny do Paříže, města, jež má, tak jako dobré víno, vlastní buket. Zvlášť pokud ho navštívíte v archivním ročníku. Tardis je ale zanese do roku 1979 – ročníku stolního vína, ročníku, který zkysnul kvůli prasklinám – ne v jejich sklenkách, ale v samotném předivu času. Pánové času se zapletou do mimozemšťanského spiknutí, ve kterém hrají roli po domácku vyrobené stroje času, krádež Mony Lisy, zmrtvýchvstání obávané rasy Jagarothů i začátek (a dost možná také konec) života na Zemi. Pokud má lidstvo přežít, musí Doktor s Romanou za pomoci britského policisty, který pro ránu nejde daleko, překazit pletichy záhadného hraběte Scarlioniho (všech dvanácti). Inu, takhle vypadá Doktorova obvyklá dovolená...

Obrovskou mocí obdařený Klíč k času byl rozdělen na sedm částí, zamaskovaných a rozptýlených napříč časem i prostorem. Ještě mocnější Bílý Strážce teď po Doktorovi žádá, aby mu všechny kousky našel. Doktor, Romana a robopes K-9 vystopovali druhou část na planetě Calufrax, když se ale trefí přesně do toho správného bodu v čase, ocitnou se přesně na nesprávné planetě – na Zanaku.
