Nejslavnější řečník antického Řecka Démosthenés musel vyvinout značné úsilí, než dosáhl svého věhlasu. Pod jeho jménem se dochovalo 60 řečí, řada listů a návodů k vystoupením. Mezi nejslavnější řeči patří O věnci, Řeči proti Filippovi (tzv. filippiky), O míru a Řeči olynthské. Soubor 13 řečí zařazených do tohoto svazku je svým charakterem unikátní - představuje totiž jediný dochovaný soubor řečí pronesených ve sněmu, tzv. démégorií. Démosthénes je vytvořil a přednesl v letech 354-335 př. Kr., tedy na vzestupu své politické aktivity v protimakedonské opozici. Navzdory několika překladatelským pokusům v minulosti vychází soubor Démosthenových démégorií poprvé v úplnosti zásluhou prof. dr. Pavla Olivy, který překlad doplnil obsáhlou předmluvou a poznámkami.

Demosthenes (384 322 BCE), orator at Athens, was a pleader in law courts who later became also a champion of Athenian greatness and Greek resistance to Philip of Macedon. His steadfastness, pungent argument, and severe control of language gained him early reputation as the best of Greek orators, and his works provide vivid pictures of contemporary life.

The four private speeches contained in this collection were functional artefacts whose object was to persuade a jury numbered in hundreds by manipulating both the facts of the case and the prejudices, beliefs and attitudes of the Athenian man-in-the-street. A commentary sheds light on their effectiveness.
