Kniha je vrcholným dielom detskej literatúry. Po mnoho generácií ostáva ozajstným dokumentom o kráse, sile a skutočnosti detského videnia sveta. Autor knihu venoval deťom základných škôl od deviatich do trinástich rokov. Napísal ju podľa denníkových zápiskov svojho syna, žiaka tretej triedytalianskej obecnej školy. Snažil sa pritom zachovať autentické myšlienky a slová. Je to príbeh jedného školského roku (1881–1882). Dielu dominuje úprimná výpoveď hlavného hrdinu Enrika, ktorý celým srdcom vníma udalosti, osudy detí i dospelých okolo seba. Detské zážitky dopĺňajú "mesačné poviedky". Každý mesiac dával jednu z nich žiakom prepísať ich učiteľ. Ide o krátke príbehy s výrazným morálnym apelom. Pre mnohých sa táto kniha, plná obetavosti, ušľachtilosti, lásky a priateľstva, stala celoživotným vzorom, o ktorý by nemala byť ochudobnená ani súčasná detská generácia.

Die Geschichten der Schüler der dritten Klasse der Baretti-Grundschule erzählen das Schicksal der Familie Alberto Bottini, wobei der Hauptcharakter sein Sohn Enrico ist. Die Handlung spielt in der italienischen Stadt Turin während eines Schuljahres von Oktober 1881 bis Juli 1882. Zu dieser Zeit ist Italien bereits als Königreich Italien vereint und wird von Umberto I. regiert, dem Sohn des Einiger-Königs Viktor Emanuel II. Turín ist die Hauptstadt der Region Piemont im Nordwesten Italiens, am Fuße der Alpen gelegen, mit einer wunderschönen Umgebung und zahlreichen Sehenswürdigkeiten. In der Geschichte spiegeln sich die sozialen Unterschiede der damaligen Zeit wider, die der Autor treffend beschreibt. In mehreren separaten Kapiteln werden auch die Lebensbedingungen blinder und tauber Kinder, von Kindern mit Rachitis und den kleinsten Waisenkindern geschildert, die in einer Art großen Krippe leben. Zudem werden verschiedene Charaktere von Lehrern und Lehrerinnen dargestellt, ihre Autorität, die Beziehung und die Liebe der Schüler zu ihnen, aber auch das Leben in existenziellen Schwierigkeiten.

Příběhy žáků třetí třídy obecné školy Barettiho vypráví osudy rodiny Alberta Bottiniho, hlavní postavou je jeho syn Enrico. Děj se odehrává v italském městě Turíně v jednom školním roce od října 1881 do července 1882. V té době je Itálie již sjednocená jako Italské království (Regno d'Italia) a vládl tu Umberto I., syn krále sjednotitele Viktora Emanuela II. Jeho vláda spadá do let 1878–1900, kdy byl zavražděn. Turín (italsky Torino) je hlavní město kraje Piemontu v severozápadní Itálii. Leží na úpatí Alpských hor, má překrásné okolí a množství památek. V příběhu se odrážejí dobové sociální rozdíly, které autor výstižně popisuje. V několika samostatných kapitolách jsou zde popsány také tehdejší podmínky života slepých a hluchých dětí, dětí stižených křivicí a nejmenších dětí z opatrovny, obdoby jakýchsi obrovských jeslí. V knize je také vykresleno několik charakterů učitelů i učitelek, jejich autorita, vztah a láska žáků k nim, zároveň však i život v existenčních potížích.

Edmondo De Amicis (1846 - 1908) was an Italian novelist, journalist, poet and short-story writer. His best-known book is Cuore, a children's novel translated into English as Heart. De Amicis fought in the battle of Custoza during the Third Independence War, a defeat of Savoy forces against the Austrian Empire. In Florence, he wrote his first sketches dealing with his frontline experience, collected as La vita militare ("Military Life", 1868), and first published by the journal of the Ministry of Defense, L'Italia Militare. In 1870, he joined the staff of the journal La Nazione in Rome, and his correspondence at the time later served as base for his travel writings: Spagna (1873), Olanda (1874), Ricordi di Londra (1874), Marocco (1876), Constantinople (1878), Ricordi di Parigi (1879).

L'idioma gentile è, ovviamente, la lingua italiana. E per tanti anni, e per molte generazioni, il saggio di De Amicis è stato un manuale divertente e colto sull'uso corretto dell'italiano, sulle origini di parole e modi di dire, sugli errori, sui solecismi e le brutture di termini nuovi. Naturalmente, oggi, molte delle parole condannate e dei modi di dire rifiutati sono correntemente entrati nell'uso e accettati da tutti. Ma è anche vero che oggi, in presenza dello strapotere linguistico dell'inglese (americano), dell'impoverimento della lingua italiana causato da un linguaggio anche televisivo ridotto ai minimi termini, il libro acquista una nuova attualità e verrà letto come un saggio storico.
