The post-war reconstruction of Bosnia is seen through the eyes of a young Englishman, Sahib, who arrives in Sarajevo as a worker for a foreign development agency. He shares his initial experiences in the Balkans through emails to his love, George, back in Britain, viewing their separation as a test of their relationship. However, he gradually becomes more immersed in the Bosnian reality, aided by his personal driver, Sakib, a Bosnian Muslim. Sahib's emails evolve into a confrontation with his own (and broader) prejudices and myths about the Balkans, the war, and the so-called Western aid, juxtaposed with real experiences. The developing relationship between Sahib and Sakib forms the core of the narrative, providing sources of comedy, tension, and an unexpected resolution at the end.

Sarajevo, 1990. The Balkan wars are raging. Maja, living in the basement of a Sarajevo museum, endures with equal annoyance Serb artillery and vegetarian meals that taste like fried sponge. Her father, the museum director, zealously guards the treasures upstairs while their aged co-lodger Juliet plots to trade them away. Maja's mother copes with yoga while her dour stepbrother Davor endures the endless crying and cravings of his pregnant wife. Need and crisis propel a lively cast through a series of humorous situations while the war carries them towards an uncertain future.

Im Sarajevo der Nachkriegszeit sucht ein vom Krieg traumatisierter Familienvater nach einem Ausweg aus seinem schal gewordenen Leben zwischen Ehefrau, Tochter und Beruf. Er kündigt seinen Job in der Werbebranche und beginnt an einer Website zu arbeiten, die nichts anderes ist als ein Roman, der sich hemmungslos am Leben seiner Familie bedient. Mit seinem Ausstieg aus dem Beruf, den er als ebenso verlogen empfindet wie die Entwicklung, die sein Land genommen hat, geht er eine Liebesgeschichte mit einer Ex-Kollegin ein. Gefangen zwischen der Angst vor dem Tod durch eine ominöse Krankheit und der Angst vor dem Leben überlässt er sich seinen Fantasien, bis ihn die Wirklichkeit einholt und er allein und ohne Perspektiven zurückbleibt. Der Preis für die ersehnte Freiheit ist hoch: Die Leere, die er selbst geschaffen hat, scheint nur ein einziges angemessenes Ende zu kennen – die Auslöschung seines Romans und damit seiner Erinnerungen, die alles sind, was ihm noch geblieben ist …
