V roce 1953 na pozadí studené války iniciovala CIA vznik utajovaného programu MKULTRA. Měl být protiváhou sovětských snah ovládnout mysl a jejich výslechových metod. Protože tajní agenti by mohli potřebovat umět, jak nenápadně použít nově vyvinuté tablety, jedy nebo prášky, CIA najala známého kouzelníka Johna Mulhollanda, aby napsal dvě příručky o umění klamu a komunikačních technikách. V roce 1973 byly téměř všechny dokumenty související s projektem MKULTRA zničeny. Předpokládalo se, že mezi nimi i Mulhollandovy příručky. Potom se ale v archivech agentů našly dvě zachovalé kopie i s ilustracemi.
