V dubnu 1944 se Rudolf Vrba zařadil mezi hrstku lidí, jimž se podařilo utéct z Osvětimi. Kniha Jonathana Freedlanda velmi poutavě a autenticky líčí nejen toto období, ale i vše, co se odehrálo potom – tzn. předání informací o dění v Osvětimi představitelům židovské obce a následně britským spojencům i celý jeho další profesní i rodinný život. Rudolf Vrba zemřel v Kanadě v roce 2006. Strhující vyprávění od oceňovaného žurnalisty vás provede neuvěřitelným, a přece skutečným příběhem muže, který odhalil nejtemnější tajemství holocaustu.

Napriek všetkým rizikám spolu s kamarátom Fredom Wetzlerom zdolali vrchy, prebrodili rieky, o vlások unikli nemeckým guľkám až napokon prepašovali prvý kompletný opis Osvienčimu, aký kedy svet videl – podrobnú správu, ktorá sa napokon dostala k Franklinovi Rooseveltovi, Winstonovi Churchillovi aj k pápežovi. Iba málokto však dbal na varovanie, pri ktorom rodák z Topoľčian – vtedy len devätnásťročný chlapec – riskoval všetko, aby ho dal na známosť. Niektorí mu neverili. Iní pokladali za lepšie mlčať. Vrba pomohol zachrániť dvestotisíc životov, ale stále bol presvedčený, že to mohlo byť oveľa viac. Toto je príbeh talentovaného „majstra útekov“, ktorý už v mladom veku chápal, že rozdiel medzi pravdou a klamstvom občas znamená aj rozdiel medzi životom a smrťou.
