Darren má predstúpiť pred upírsku radu, ktorá každých dvanásť rokov zasadá na tajomnej Upírskej hore. Ako sa na Upírskej hore rozhodne o jeho osude? Darren má po prvý raz možnosť zblízka spoznať fascinujúci život upírskeho klanu, no zaplatí za to krvavú daň...

Darren Shan je obyčajný chlapec, ktorý chodí do školy, baví ho futbal a komiksy. Jeho život sa však dramaticky zmení, keď sa raz s kamarátom Stevom dostane na utajené predstavenie Cirkusu Monsterus, v ktorom účinkujú podivuhodné výtvory prírody ako napríklad vlčí muž, bradatá žena alebo strašná pavúčica. Príjemné zimomriavky sa menia na nebezpečné dobrodružstvo, keď sa Darren a Steve ocitnú v pasci, z ktorej sa dá vykúpiť len dohodou s upírom.

Darren Shan odišiel zo svojho mesta a od svojej rodiny s upírom, ktorý vystupuje v Cirkuse Monsterus pod pseudonymom pán Crepsley. Stal sa jeho učňom a pomocníkom. Je z neho polovičný upír, no nechce piť ľudskú krv, prijíma iba zvieraciu, pretože chce čo najdlhšie zostať aspoň čiastočne človekom. Podarí sa mu vyhnúť temnému osudu a zostať súčasťou sveta ľudí? Alebo prevládne tá časť z neho, ktorú si podrobil pán Crepsley?

Tretí diel úspešnej upírskej ságy, v ktorom Darren Shan odchádza z Cirkusu Monsterus, kde sa začal jeho trpký život polovičného upíra. Spolu s pánom Crepsleym, svojím upírskym „rodičom“, a s Evrom Vonom, najlepším kamarátom, sa usadí v meste. A chvíľu to vyzerá, že život sa dostal do normálnych koľají. Darren sa dokonca zaľúbi... Ale potom sa v starom dome nájdu mŕtve telá – zbavené aj poslednej kvapky krvi. Polícia vyšetruje vraždy a Darren s Evrom rozbiehajú pátranie na vlastnú päsť. Nočné potulky pána Crepsleyho sú im totiž čoraz podozrivejšie... Kto je vrah? A kto je pre Darrena najväčšou hrozbou?
