Positions and Interpretations
German Adverbial Adjectives at the Syntax-Semantics Interface
The structural and semantic properties of adverbials represent a still poorly understood area of sentential syntax and semantics in Germanic languages. In particular, it is an open question which different adverbial usages need to be distinguished, which usages are tied to which syntactic positions, and how these different usage can be formally analyzed. Focussing on adverbial adjectives in German, this study provides detailed answers to these questions. By distinguishing between verb-related adverbials and event-related adverbials, the author provides a new analysis of the large class of adverbials traditionally labelled as manner adverbials. It is shown that the two different classes are linked to different syntactic positions, and formal analyses and derivations for the two different usages are developed. The book is therefore of interest not only to anyone working on the linguistics of German but also to all linguists working on the syntax-semantics interface and the formal analysis of adverbials.
Theatre in Handwriting
Hamburg Prompt Book Practices, 1770s-1820s
Based on examples of the vast Hamburg Theatre-Library from the 1770s to 1820s, this study proposes a transdisciplinary approach towards handwritten artefacts in modern European theatre.
What is semantic transparency, why is it important, and which factors play a role in its assessment? This work approaches these questions by investigating English compound nouns. The first part of the book gives an overview of semantic transparency in the analysis of compound nouns, discussing its role in models of morphological processing and differentiating it from related notions. After a chapter on the semantic analysis of complex nominals, it closes with a chapter on previous attempts to model semantic transparency. The second part introduces new empirical work on semantic transparency, introducing two different sets of statistical models for compound transparency. In particular, two semantic factors were explored: the semantic relations holding between compound constituents and the role of different readings of the constituents and the whole compound, operationalized in terms of meaning shifts and in terms of the distribution of specifc readings across constituent families. All semantic annotations used in the book are freely available.

»Because you're mine, I walk the line.« Allzu geradlinig hat Johnny Cash nie gelebt. Aber wie kein anderer wurde er zur Stimme Amerikas mit seinen Songs, in denen Gott, Liebe und Mord so nahe beieinander sind. In die Country Hall of Fame wurde er ebenso aufgenommen wie in die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Und auf seinen letzten CDs mischt er die Genres mit der Souveränität eines Meisters, dem Gattungsgrenzen längst nichts mehr bedeuten.
